Using Hearing Aids successfully

Most people with hearing loss could benefit from hearing aids after going through an adaptation period. The ease of adaptation differs from people to people. Seniors would obviously need a longer period of adaptation than young adults. Other key factors include wearer’s attitude, onset of hearing loss, type and degree of hearing loss. Wearing hearing aids consistently results in the most hearing benefit.

Hearing aid first time user might not identify all the speech sound on the very first day of fitting, follows the procedure below to allow you or your family members to enjoy all of the benefit a hearing aid offers:

  1. Wear the new hearing aids for a few hours on the first day. Increase the time gradually until he/she is at the stage when he/she can wear the hearing instrument for 5 to 6 hours day without noticing them.
  2. Begin the adaptation period in familiar surroundings in his/her own home. Put hearing aids on and start conversing with one person. Adjust the volume control when he/she need increased loudness.
  3. Learn to listen with noise. Hearing instruments reintroduce wearer to many sounds that he/she may have forgotten, e.g. clicking of heels on the floor, children laughing & bird singing. Not all the sounds are pleasant, of course. Wearer need to practice concentrating on what he/she want to hear and ignore those that are less important.
  4. Wearing hearing aids and hearing a greater range of sounds might tire wearer or make wearer irritable, take a break if necessary.
  5. If the hearing aid is whistling, check that the in-the-ear (ITE) aid or ear mould is properly inserted and the volume is not turned up too high
  6. In ear pain is noted, check that the in-the-ear (ITE) aid or ear mould is properly inserted and take a break.
